In the UK a “King sized” bed (which is commonly known as a “Queen sized bed” in America and Australia) measures 150cm wide x 200cm long, whilst a “Super King sized bed (which is known sometimes wrongly labelled as a “Queen sized bed in the UK) measures about 180xm wide and 200cm long (we label this a “King” sized bed)
Confused? Imagine you are moving from one country to another and you start to buy bed linen in terms you are familiar with and pick up a Queen size set of sheets in the UK only to find it doesn't fit your Australian Queen bed as the size is different. Frustrating!
New Zealand has the largest array of bed sizes to choose from with a total of 9 ranging from Single through to California King (which is a different size again to the California King you can purchase in America)
The most common sizes around the world still tend to be:
150cm x 200cm Australian Queen
180 x 200cm Australian King
Although they will be labelled differently in various countries.
The largest bed is a California King which in its native home measures approximately: 200 x 210cm.
Now let’s add our new popular additions of the “Topper” to our mattress and we now have a deep mattress which we need fitted deep pocket sheets to fit!
In the world of bed linen it is confusing to both the customer and the manufacturer when size is discussed and as you can see “Size” really does matter so lets hope we can all make shopping that little bit easier and in Australia add an extra 10 cm to our length of quilt covers to give that little bit more for tall people and bring us more in line with overseas linen groups!
That’s my two bobs worth anyway!
