I remember talking my dad into letting me join squad when I was 9 and promised I would get up at 4.45am every morning without fail! Well as you can imagine some mornings I didn't and there he would stand at the end of the bed until I dragged myself out, pulled on my bathers and headed for the pool.
My commitment didn't falter though and I continued on this path for all of my school years, swimming competitively both in Australia and overseas and finished up teaching others when I was an adult.
Funnily though I look back and realize that for me it was never about the winning but my love of swimming that kept me going. Now don’t get me wrong yes I did love to win but it wasn't the driving factor. Today I realise how much that commitment helps drive me in my business.
Now along came my children and yes they also loved to swim and as the good mum that I was I also got up at 4.45am to take them to squad and why did they go? Because they loved to swim!
Now my blog today isn't on swimming but on doing what you love to do and why it becomes so important in our lives. Richard Branson talks about telling his children that they may have to leave the schools they were in when things got tough and look where he is now! I started a business from designing bed linen that would help people find a happy peaceful place in the bedroom. Why? Because we all shared the same problem and someone had to solve it so we could all sleep better!
Running a business or following a dream is a big step in anyone’s life but for some of us it is what makes us want to get out of bed everyday and brings a smile to our face even when times are tough. It isn't about the winning it is about the love of what we do and what we can do for others so maybe all those long sessions in the pool helped shaped me into doing what I love today and gave me the ability to keep on trying :)
