Research shows that Australian concern for the environment has been gradually declining in recent years. Therefore, steps should be taken to ensure a healthier and greener lifestyle! As a matter of fact, wouldn't it be best if it all starts at home; specifically, at the very room where everything begins once the sun rises?
We are, of course, talking about the bedrooms; the place where we wake up every morning and hit the hay nightly! In this part of our home alone, a number of steps can already be taken to ensure that we, in our own way, have already taken part in the fight for a greener world!
One step that can be taken is called "upcycling". Upcycling is the process of renovating or converting our household furniture or old stuffs to make them look different, all the while giving them an entirely different purpose as well. An example of this is using an old ladder as a bookshelf by hanging it horizontally on the bedroom wall.
Another step that can be taken is by using more of the "organic" than the "synthetic". Why not consider painting your bedroom wall with natural paint instead of the ones that are full of chemical substances (volatile organic compounds) that are harmful to the environment? Why not use organic sheets (like our Mulberry Silk Quilts or our Bamboo Quilts *wink*) and mattresses that are lined with natural fiber? Think about it. This would not only be beneficial to you but to the environment as well.
Furthermore, things can also be done to the room temperature! Consider investing in wooden blinds instead of fans. You could also invest in thermostats to have better control over how hot or cold it is in your room. If you don't want to invest in a thermostat, even windows can do their part in our cause. By using windows that are lined with coatings that reflect heat and provide insulation, you can keep your room significantly warmer.
Great flooring can also transform your room into an eco-friendly one! It may be done in terms of the floor itself, or the carpets if you prefer them! For the former, you may try using reclaimed wood flooring which can definitely add appeal to the room’s interior, while for the latter, alternatives exist in place of regular nylon that otherwise contain harmful chemicals!
Finally, nothing could be better than having plants freshen the bedroom's ambiance! Plants filter air and helps remove harmful substances in it. You should, of course, choose plants that fit...
So why not consider choosing to make a change? Why not take small steps to make even the most minor environmental concern non-existent?! After all, it wouldn't hurt to wake up in a room filled with a fresher aura around it.
Do you remember being sent to your room as a child for time out, and being happy or sad?
I was always happy as it meant I could go and read and maybe the jobs would be done by my other siblings before I was allowed out!
However mum caught on to this pretty quickly so at times I would be sent to my brother’s room which had nothing in it I liked in it.
Times have now changed and we have so many cool gadgets for kids in this Tech savvy world that I wonder how they feel if sent to their room for time out or to go to sleep at night? Is it a haven or a hazard?
Do you allow your child to read before bed or play with the ipad? Do they watch movies or play games whilst in bed and is this a soothing down time before sleep?
We are, as adults probably just as guilty of phones by the bed, TV’s in the bedroom and ipads at the ready when we go to sleep or wake up but does it really help us wind down?
We didn’t allow our children to have a TV in the bedroom when they were growing up as we thought they would become anti social and forget how to sit as a family and laugh at shows together.
My favourite way to go to sleep is still reading a good book, tucked under the covers with the soft glow of a bedside light and so do my daughters!
I would like to think we can all have some quiet areas for both our children and ourselves that we can retreat to at the end of a day, to just relax and unwind as it really doesn’t matter how young or old you are we all need some warm nurturing homely rooms to enjoy!
Bedroom storage solutions for all seasons.
How often do you walk around your bedroom with an item in hand looking for a place to put it? I do it so many times that I wonder how it felt when I first moved into our home and wondered how I was going to fill it!
Storage in the bedroom for bedlinen or personal items can be tricky as some things we like to display and others we don’t! So where can we put them?
Below I have listed some easy decorating solutions and ideas that will hopefully bring some harmony and storage to your bedroom!
· Have a bed head made that will open on hinges so that it may be used for storing extra pillows or small blankets that are used seasonally.
· If, like me, you have a bedside table that has draws but are an avid reader think about having a small bookshelf built in to your wall between the studs to display your most favourite night time reading and small prints of the family.
· Look for a glory box (yes they are still around) or chest or long seat with a lid for the end of the bed to store your bed pillows when you hop into bed at night.
· I have a chaise lounge in my room that unfortunately seems to hold more than my wardrobe some days but it is ideal for sitting on when getting ready and holding some of the clothing items I may need tomorrow!
· Build or buy a long low shelf/draw unit for under the window to store knick knacks, jumpers or everyday items for a quick find. This can be made to be a perfect addition to any bedroom as places like IKEA have them in various colours to suit both modern and old style furniture.
· In children’s rooms the box shelving with the coloured boxes are always a hit as so much can be stored here and are easy to the kids to pack their toys into.
· Hooks on walls in any bedroom can be used to hold both dressing gowns and jackets that are now easy to grab.
Small baskets to hold scarves, or hats can give more room on shelves.
Hopefully all of these ideas will help make your bedroom a warm haven that you love to spend time in.
Do you cringe when you walk into a store and the shop assistant is suddenly by your
side and not leaving until you purchase from them?
Or how about the opposite when you have found the product you would like to buy but
there is no sales assistant in sight and when you find one they tell you it’s not their area and cant help you!
Where did we go wrong in customer service and how can we
change it? We do want help finding a size at times and we may want more
information about a product so is it wrong to assume these questions will be
answered honestly and with a degree of knowledge about the item in
Is it any wonder we are trolling the online sites for products as we can email a
quick question while our feet are on the desk and have a reply in minutes and
not feel pressured into a sale.
I always enjoyed the shopping excursions with my mum heading into town by train
spending the day in stores looking for just the right item, then lunch and the
trip home with a happy smile and a new item held
Now my daughters say they don’t have time but will look on the internet at night
while watching TV and may run into a store near Uni to check it out then make up
Is it customer service as I originally thought that drove us away or is it maybe us
that do not have the time any longer to wander and find the enjoyment of making that special purchase, finding a bargain, feeling the clothes drape around us..?
Are we the shopper to blame for our own lack of interest and the current need for
speed and not enjoyment when it comes to shopping and is this why customer
service seems to have hit rock bottom in Australia?
Food for thought.
Quilt covers are truly a treat to be had in any bedroom set. They make bedding just that bit more desirable.
Duvet covers or as we know them as Quilt covers are truly a treat to be had in any bedroom set. They make the bedding just that much more desirable. There are many reasons why one decides to make the purchase of a quilt cover set. One would be that it keeps the inner quilt safe from any direct spills and dirt.
This can be very important if you spend a whole lot of money on some luxury down or silk quilt. Chances are you do not want to be buying a new one every month or spending loads of money at the dry cleaners every few days. So to prevent this smart person gets a quilt cover to protect that luxury bedding from any harm. Some quilt covers or silk quilt inners also bring many anti bacterial qualities too. For instance some quilts can protect up to an amazing 99.8 percent of bacteria, which is why many smart parents use them to keep their children nice and protected from bacteria causing infections.
One thing that all quilt covers have in common is the ability to protect the quilt from harm. This is probably the most important because believe it or not, some quilts can harbor bacteria very quickly. The reason for this is because when you spill something on a quilt or even wash it for that matter the substance can seep deep into the fabric and stay their between the down or feather. Once it is there, fungi and mold will begin to grow creating a perfect environment to harvest bacteria, making your bed set not the safest place to be. That is why quilt covers play such an important role in the bedroom. With our Coshee sets it is so easy to change the sheet rather than the cover and for most families this saves significant time.
Everyone has their own take on what style and design they prefer. The best thing about our Coshee bedding is you can change your bedding as often as you change your mind about what design style you like, because this bedding is not only affordable but, also it is extremely easy to change in and out. Also as any decorator knows if you are going to change your bedroom décor it is best if you start with a center piece and decorate around it. Coshee quilt covers are a perfect way to make your bedroom that center and change the sheets to when needed. The problem many people have when changing their quilt sets is that they also have to change the rest of their bedding. Now you can buy our Coshee’s in a set and then purchase the co-ordinated sheets to change the look with minimal fuss. I also believe using a king size quilt and cover are best used on a queen size bed because with king covers you can let the it hang and it will eliminate the need for a bed skirt and give you far more fabric and quilt when sleeping at night meaning no more losing your covers when sleeping.
This will save you time and money looking for one that matches and with all beds in your house if you upsize from the even the single to a double cover set you will always sleep comfortably and that is why king covers are best for a queen sized bed.
One of the new buzz terms for 2012/13 was the man cave and not just for men with lots of children wanting time out, but for single men or newly married men wanting a masculine room to share with mates while watching a sports event.
It becomes the private sanctuary that needs to be totally masculine and decorated as such. So who then does the decorating and where in the house does this room fit?
For many, it is a basement or garage or, if lucky, a well built shed away from the house.
Decorating is the key to making this room work and, ladies, it has to be their choice as it is not our room but theirs!
Earthy dark tones and sleek furniture, sporting team memorabilia and a few comfy chairs start the look and feel.
A billiard table or games area even an outdoor basketball hoop brings the room together.
A well placed bar with smart wooden features and display shelves will finish the look along with a wall mounted TV and you have the room your partner will be happy to retire to hopefully after the dishes are done!
